"I started YANA to give other abandoned children the love and support that I wish I had received." She described it as almost impossible to get financial aid from the government, so YANA is funded by donations from individuals and companies around the world. She has a team of about 18 people that work for YANA in various capacities, from teachers to housekeepers and administrative assistants. In May 2021, Tusaiwe founded her second organisation 'You Are Not Alone' (YANA) which supports nearly 300 vulnerable people in Malawi with a foster home, special needs school, two preschools, a vocational school for women, two support groups for the elderly and currently building a clinic and a high school in Mzuzu, Malawi. Her organisation allowed her to get together with other young mothers and inspire them to aim for success, as well as start a preschool to help them. At age 16, she fell pregnant and is a single parent to son Jeromy.Īfter a couple of difficult years, she was kicked out of her home at age 18, which inspired her to start 'Empowering Young Mothers'. She was abandoned by her biological mother as a baby.
